We have this problem exactly *because* I paid attention to user feedback.

Ugh.  Not going to do the second, it woulld be a classic case of lazily
substituting an option for figuring out what the right thing is.

OTOH, I think "sensible upper limit" is reasonable to try.  What would
you propose?  Is there any way to gather statistics on the length
distribution of hostmes, so we can set a threshold that handles 95%
of cases?
