You only trust a stratum one that agrees with other stratum one's. That
way a stratum one can stop using its local refclock if/when it goes
wacko, and still provide good time. Like when a bird sits on your GPS
antenna.
And single time source may work, but it bypasses the grouping and
selection algorithms. You want to see them work too.
And, as always, chronyd takes a different tack. It has features that
ntpd does not for standalone operation.

Not practical for the HOWTO, but practical for you. So, yes, and advanced
topic. But for you to get confidence in how good your RasPi setup it, you
want to go one step beyond.
