How much testing do you do by hand?  Is that written down anyplace?  Should 
it be on the release checklist?  ...

I just added tests/python3-tester.sh, a clone of tests/option-tester.sh
It builds a simple configuration with python3 and runs various programs
(using python3) far enough to print out the version string.
