I turn off the EEE in my switches. EEE can cause me troubles.

spidey ~ # ethtool --show-eee eth0
EEE Settings for eth0:
	EEE status: enabled - inactive
	Tx LPI: 0 (us)
	Supported EEE link modes: 100baseT/Full
	                           1000baseT/Full
	Advertised EEE link modes: 100baseT/Full
	                            1000baseT/Full
Link partner advertised EEE link modes: Not reported

If you are looking for high performance over GigE just go directly to
PTP. A big leap in performance over any NTP.
