The API has a name, but the largest class of implementations doesn't
use it.  In some circles it's called SADA - Sun Audio Device
API. Which tells you where it originated, all right, but the most
commonly deployed SADA-like facilities are the old Linux OSS Audio
and the (unnamed) sound API on *BSD systems.
