gdb can't find symbols

I don't have any strong opinions.  I put all that stuff into a shell script 
so once I understand how things work I can get what I want.

We need to document whatever we do.  Or maybe I'm just showing some of my 
ignorance.  Has anybody else tried to use gdb?

Maybe we need an expanded version of the --help printout.
