OK, that is the direction I was pretty much expecting. I wish Amar or
someone else could do the replay, but (sigh) it needs my detailed
knowledge of the present code's evolutionary path.

However, there's a decent hope that the resulting replay branch will
be dramatically easier to read and *not* need me to grok it.  That's
one of the main reasons this is worth doing.
