It works great, the errors are much smaller when it's enabled.

The software transmit/receive should always be available, the
support depends on what hardware you have. Software TX/RX should
always be available, and if it's not, it should be easy to add
support for it. If the OS doesn't provide it, you can still do
something in the daemon itself.
