Which is a big doc, so I'm still not sure which part we are talking
about here...

That is a bad way to think of this.  What you call "terrible" and
"unnecessary" ideas are what I see as the baby steps and directed walk
towards a barely perceived goal.

You don't say a toddler walks terribly, you cheer him on that mode of
movement as a necessary step toward adulthood.

See Karl Marx and his "Dialectical materialism".  The path to 'truth'
is long and bendy.  Competing ideas lead to better ideas.
