Policy question - drop low-precision clocks?

It also gets normal serial info via true_receive

The polling is necessary to handle the case where the device gets unplugged.
(That's on a real serial port or the far side of a USB-Serial setup.  If you 
unplug the USB end you get an error.)

I haven't looked carefully.
