I don't see how that does what I want.

I'm looking for something that ignores a file and any commits to that file 
when I do a push.

.gitignore doesn't do what I want.  I need to commit something so I can 
update the last-commit time stamp, but I don't want that junk to get pushed 
back where anybody else will see it.
