I should have looked at the man page.  pthead_kill sends a signal. ...

I didn't see a serious warning on that man page.  If I didn't know about the 
longjmp mess, I probably wouldn't be suspicious.

Are there other system routines that have similar problems?  Is there a good 
web page listing them and/or discussing the issues?
