Why does waf configure require perl?

What do we gain by leaving it in at all?

Looks like awk is in the same boat.

One of these days we should go through the scripts in util/ and verify that 
they still work and/or do something useful.  There are several of them for 
analyzing or plotting log files.  They probably need some sample log files.
